Arkansas Heat

SPRINGDALE, ARKANSAS

APRIL 2021

90' x 25'

This project was commissioned in partnership with the Downtown Springdale Alliance. It was my first public mural that I was awarded through my submission for a Request for Proposals, also known as an RFP. I remember getting the call, I was in my apartment, and I was shaking with excitement. This wall was quadruple the size I had anticipated, and the visibility was much higher than anything I had ever done. This project was the one that started my career as a muralist and introduced me to some incredible mentors, business owners, and peers in the arts community. The base coat and restoration were completed by Karl Fuller and his team at Select Professional Painters.  It took me almost exactly 4 weeks. I created the design first on Photoshop and then painted on a piece of canvas that I had planned out to scale.

I often point to this mural as the kind of painting I produce when I am given full freedom over the outcome. This design was inspired by growing up in the heat of an Arkansas summer. Fishing, swimming, and camping with friends and family are among my fondest and most vivid memories. I especially love the split between the warm and cool tones in this composition, making the two halves of the painting feel like they are different worlds.

Special thanks to the Downtown Springdale Alliance, Jill Dabbs, Karl Fuller, and the Hesses.
